For our ultimate Baja Journey, we have combined two of Baja's premier experiences into one!

Whale watching in Magdalena Bay and hiking and kayaking on Espiritu Santo, one of the most beautiful islands in the Sea of Cortez, have long been two of the most precious pearls of adventure travel.

The Experience

From the deserted Pacific coast with its energetic crashing surf, to the surreal terrain of crescent shaped sand dunes, to the tranquility of our camp on the whale-filled bay, the transformative opportunities are awesome.

 

 

Espiritu Santo Island is the quintessential Baja retreat. Our days are filled with easy hikes deep into the island interior to explore fascinating flora and surreal desert landscapes or you'll find yourself kayaking across turquoise bays to cavort with sea lions, pelicans and all the other rich sea life of the Sea of Cortez.

With the full moon shining down upon us, night kayaking on the calm still waters of the bay is an experience you will never forget.

The Environment

Magdalena Bay - Baja, California, where the desert meets the sea.  This enchanting landscape is the backdrop for one of the premiere wildlife viewing experiences in the world. Sheltered by low barrier islands, the waters of Magdalena Bay provide a perfect and peaceful winter home to hundreds of California Gray Whales.

These magnanimous creatures allow us to watch them roll, breach and tend to their young - an experience both exhilarating and humbling.

During your journey you will find plenty of opportunities for hiking, kayaking and beach exploring in addition to the daily whale watching experiences.  Discover herons, egrets and ibis as you navigate your kayak through mangrove estuaries.  Beach comb amidst old ship wrecks, a myriad of sand dollars, exotic shells and bleached whale bones.

All of our whale watching experiences will be aboard outboard skiffs designed especially for intimate encounters with the whales.

This is a unique opportunity found almost nowhere else in the world.

Our private camp is situated on a secluded beach amidst idyllic beauty and is equipped with every amenity from oversized walk-in tents to solar heated showers.

Espiritu Santo Island - embodies the true essence of Baja. Surrounded by turquoise waters, its sheltered coves and white sand beaches stand in stark contrast to sheer volcanic cliffs of red, orange, yellow, white and black.

During your journey you will find plenty of opportunities for hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, relaxing and soaking up plenty of the Baja sunshine. Snorkeling with the comical and curious sea lions of Los Islotes is a highlight of the trip. Kayaking across waters rich with sea life along the mesmerizing desert coastline is a meditative experience not to be missed and exploring the rich environment of the inland canyons and tranquil grottos will leave you deeply touched by Baja’s diversity.

Our base camp is situated on a heavenly beach at the end of a deep cove dotted with islands and backed by a surreal canyon populated with fig trees and lush desert flora. A natural well provides daily showers and our expert crew provides all the delicious food you can savor. Enjoy happy hour as the sky comes alive with the rich colors of Baja’s famous sunsets and pelicans dive into the bay for their final meal of the day.


Your Guides

Chess Edwards, owner of Still Water Travel, is a professional expedition leader, adventure travel photographer, naturalist, storyteller and life-balance coach. Trained in Wilderness Leadership and Outdoor Programming, Chess is skilled in the art of managing group dynamics and promoting personal growth. Chess is one of the pioneers of Magdalena Bay whale watching programs and has guided sea kayaking, Himalayan trekking and cultural exploration programs throughout the world for over twenty years.
